Cincinnati Views
Berman Printing Company
1992
26” x 39”
Mike Zender, Stan Brod, Gordon Salchow and Joe Bottoni collaborated on this set of four posters promoting the capabilities of the Berman Printing Company.
The theme Cincinnati Views was agreed upon. A panoramic photo of the Cincinnati skyline divided equally into four vertical sections became the starting point. Each designer was responsible for his section, and encouraged to bring his own conceptual interpretations, visual directions and printing features to it. A grid of four squares across and six squares top-to-bottom was utilized to visually relate and link the individual sections.
Joe Bottoni selected various visual motifs to suggest different city environments and the alternative perspectives of the people who live in or visit them. For example, several meanings are conveyed by the graffiti subject matter: sentiments of love, a neglected city area, and the defacement of property. The riverfront theme suggests a site for recreation and festive events, discarded trash and floating debris.
Besides four-color printing, a number of alternative techniques were used to highlight Berman’s capabilities. They included: spot-colors, metallic inks, neon inks, various types of halftones and custom screens.
Designed as a multi-purpose piece, the posters could be displayed individually or collectively.
